EQUINE INFLUENZA OUTBREAKS

8 February 2019
Dear Organising Committee,
The FEI would like to provide you with information and advice concerning the current equine influenza outbreaks.

Multiple outbreaks have been confirmed in Belgium, France, Germany,
Great Britain, Ireland, Nigeria, and the United States of America since the beginning of 2019.

All FEI horses must have an up-to-date vaccination history in their passports and checks are carried out on entry to all FEI events. Unvaccinated horses are at greater risk of being infected and will be more severely affected.

In order to prevent further spread of the disease and to avoid the possibility that FEI events are cancelled due to outbreaks, the FEI Veterinary Department would like to remind you that Organising Committees are responsible for ensuring that all biosecurity requirements, as per the FEI Veterinary Regulations, are strictly followed at all times.

These include but are not limited to:
– Examination on arrival must take place – this is the best opportunity to stop an infected horse entering the venue.
– The OC must provide sufficient space for the examination and, just as importantly, the time necessary for the veterinarian to carry out the examination.
– The Veterinary Delegate/Foreign Veterinary Delegate is responsible for ensuring that the examination on arrival takes place, but may refer the task to the Veterinary Services Manager.

You will find detailed information in the following Articles of the FEI Veterinary Regulations: 1010, 1017, 1018, 1028-1031.

Information and advice has been issued to FEI stakeholders and can be accessed here and a comprehensive question and answer document on equine influenza is available here.

We would also like to recommend you to visit the Veterinary Courses on FEI Campus where you will find a course on event biosecurity that is highly relevant to Organising Committees.
